This week’s photo session is with Madison and Jordan. They are getting married in 2026 and wanted to get their engagement session done this year so they could send out their save the date cards to the guests. Unfortunately, we have had a lot of rain the last couple of weeks in Atlanta. We rescheduled several times and settled on Saturday at Piedmont Park.

I knew I was going to love this couple when they enthusiastically agreed to start in Piedmont Park before sunrise. This is the best time to shoot in Atlanta. There is no one around to make you feel self-conscious; the park is empty, and the weather is a lot cooler!

When we got to Piedmont Park on Saturday Morning at 6:15am it was just before sunrise. This is called the blue hour. The sky is a deep blue with a lighter color towards the east where the sun rises. Madison came loaded with two bottles of champagne for one of my signature celebration shots.

Our first location was the Greystone building. It is a historic building that hosts large events and is beside the pool and lake in the middle of the park. The building's entrance has large stone columns and 3 arches that make for a grand statement to the enormous stone building. The entrance also makes for a dark area where you can put a flash for some dramatic lighting. This is where I set them up for a champagne shot. The flash is placed behind the couple where it serves two purposes. One it backlights the couple and second lights up and freezes the spray of the champagne as it comes out of the bottle. Madison and Jordan sprayed the champagne like real pros!

While we still had a little blue light left, I thought I would try something different. I recently purchased a small portable fog machine. I had recently used it at a wedding with a flash and was pleased with the results. We went to the gazebo in the middle of the lake in Piedmont Park. There is a stone bridge that leads to the gazebo, then there is a small walkway that connects the gazebo to the bridge. The walkway has love locks on it like the famous bridge in Paris. I placed the fog machine and flash in the back of the gazebo and placed the couple in front, so the fog was brightly lit with the flash. The photo came out great and the couple had fun with the fog too.
The next location was a landing at the south end of the lake. It has the best skyline in the city. You get the lake in the foreground and the Atlanta skyline in the background. You see it in a lot of commercials shot in Atlanta.

Working with the light we had, I took them to the pier at the north end of the lake to catch the sunrise. There the couple were backlit with the sun and the lake in the background as they danced on the pier. I also did another thing that was new for me and I brought a drone and shot the couple with video.

We then ended up by the wall by the soccer field. This is the second-best location in the park for a skyline. There you have the original historic wall from when the park was first built and the Atlanta skyline in the background. It was the perfect ending of a perfect shoot.
