Engagement Shoot at the Historic Naylor Hall in Roswell Georgia by the Atlanta Wedding Photographers at AtlantaArtisitcWeddings

by David Diener

This week’s photo session is at my favorite venue, Naylor Hall.  It was a combination engagement, educational, and promotional session.  Over the years I have become friends with the staff there.  Two of my treasured friends are Cameron and Abbey.  Cameron is working on his video portfolio.  He came up with the idea of shooting his sister Sammie and her fiancé John's engagement session at Naylor Hall.

I got there early Sunday morning.  Sammie and John came up with their dog.  He was a cute fella with lots of energy.  While I was getting to know Sammie and John, Cameron was setting up the video camera.  While we had the morning light, I wanted to try something new.

Over the years I have used many flashes from Canon, Nikon, Sony and other manufacturers.  A few years ago,  I came across Godex flashes and fell in love with them.  They are less expensive than the Nikon, Canon or Sony flashes but are just as reliable and more versatile.  I have been using the Godex v860 flash on my camera.  It has all the features that I want.  It has a rechargeable battery that will last a whole wedding.  I used to use expensive AA batteries on the manufacturer’s flashes.  The flash also has two simple features that are not included in the Canon flash.  One, a simple battery indicator to let you know the status of your battery charge. Second, is a modeling light,  which is very useful for focus when you are shooting in a low light situation like a wedding reception.  The flash on top of the camera can also be used as a controller to the many other flashes that Godex offers.  I usually combine the powerful and small AD100Pro flash.  They are perfect for weddings.  They are very powerful and can be easily set up in many locations such as behind a bride for backlighting or on a dining table pointed up at the ceiling to give you defused light.  The other thing about this flash is that it is built tough!  I have put it through the ringer on several occasions.

Today I wanted to shoot a champagne shot where the couple is backlit on a large porch in front of this historic mansion.  Since it was during the day I had to use a very powerful Godex AD200 TTL flash.  I put the flash behind the couple, and it lit up the porch and couple for some dramatic lighting.

We then went to the front of the mansion to incorporate their pet.  He did a few tricks and was a real champ!  The lighting was perfect for emphasizing  the couple's beautiful hair.

We then started to move to the front towards the street.  We first stopped at the bushes and shot through them.  That way we could add some depth to the photos and frame the couple in green.

Then I did something that I never do with couples.  I let Sammie and John walk in the middle of the street.   Since it was early in the day, there was not much traffic.  They walked right on the painted marker in the middle of the road.  They marched and kissed in the road like it was theirs.  I loved their confidence and sense of adventure.

We then wrapped up with a few more photos inside and to the side of the building playing around with the foreground using the flowers on the grounds.

Sammie and John were such a wonderful couple.  I want to thank them for their time and patience throughout the shoot.  I also want to thank Cameron and Abbey for all their support.  I don’t know what I would do without them!
