This week I am going to talk about what I am looking for when I am shooting a wedding. As a Atlanta Wedding Photographer I know great light is the magic ingredient. To put it simply, a great photograph starts with great light. It is the first thing I think of when I am scheduling a photo shoot or when I am on location posing a bride and groom. The light can make or break a photo.

If you look at the top photo of this blog it was taken in a power-line corridor behind the couple’s house. When you think of powerline corridors you don’t usually think of great photo locations. But if you have the right light you can make a beautiful photo with an ugly powerline corridor.
If you have been following me I like shooting in the morning, a little after sunrise. That is. when the light is lower in the sky which makes for more dramatic shadows and you can use the light as backlighting for a subject. The sun is also a lot warmer when it is going through the atmosphere at that angle. That is why it is called the golden hour.
“Where light and shadow fall on your subject - that is the essence of expression and art through photography.

In all these photographs there is minimal editing. I let the natural light do the work for me. One of my early mentors told me. David, amateur photographers talk about their equipment because they think that is what makes great photos, and some professional photographers talk about how much they charge because they think great photos are expensive to make. But an artist will always talk about the light because that is where all great photos come from!
