As an Atlanta wedding photographer, I get to shoot at some amazing locations. As some of you may know I am involved in historic preservation and I love historic venues. This week we are going to cover some of my favorite historic places of worship in Atlanta. I am also sharing a map of the historic churches, temples and synagogues in Atlanta. I hope you enjoy this little tour as much as I do.
The Temple, established in 1860 to serve the needs of the German-Jewish immigrants, is the only non-Christian historic house of worship in Midtown. The neoclassical Temple was designed by noted Atlanta classicist Philip Trammell Shutze in 1931. While dramatically scaled back from the pre-Depression plans, the sanctuary takes cues from Venetian churches Shutze saw while studying in Rome. During the 1950’s and 1960’s, The Temple was a center for civil rights advocacy. Its civil rights role was one of the central themes in the movie Driving Miss Daisy.

This week’s post is a very special one. I was contacted by Collin who was going to propose to his girl friend Taylor. He wanted to surprise her and propose to her at Ponce City Market. As an Atlanta wedding photographer it is such an honor to photograph special moments like this.
When you are setting up a surprise proposal there is a lot of planning but at the same time you have to be flexible in the moment. We made time in the evening to plan the proposal. He said he had a reservation for 7pm at 9 Mile Station.

A few years ago I had the honor of shooting Rachel and Alfred’s wedding at Callanwolde. They were such a great couple and so thoughtful to each other.
Now fast forward to a couple of months ago and Rachel contacted me and let me know that she is pregnant! I was so excited for them. I usually don’t do maternity photoshoots but if you were a couple of mine I would do it because it is so cool to see these couples in the next stage of their lives. After chatting with Rachel we decided to move the date to about 1 month before she was due.
It is such an honor being an Atlanta wedding photographer and getting to document people's milestones throughout life. This is the third maternity shoot of one of my couples and is always a treat. I can’t wait until my next couple's maternity shoot!
As an Atlanta wedding photographer I think the most rewarding and challenging wedding photography is shooting at night. You have to be very aware of the ambient light and know how to bring light to a bride or couple.
When I mentioned ambient light that means the existing light. The existing light can be the light from the room, dj’s lights, or the night sky. My favorite kind of night sky is the blue hour. It happens about 20 minutes after sunset. You have to time it perfectly. When you have timed it just right you can have some dramatic results. You can see that I do that often during my weddings. You just set up the lights and tap the couple on the shoulder and they step outside for 3 minutes and they have a beautiful dramatic portrait.
As you know, February is Black History Month! With it being Black History Month, I thought it would be interesting to learn more about some wedding traditions and how they can celebrate a couple’s Black heritage.
This week’s blog is on the Payne-Corley House. As an Atlanta wedding photographer at atlantaartisticweddings it is one of my favorite places to shoot. It is located in the Duluth Historic District right across the street from the train tracks that go through downtown.
While all these physical upgrades make for a beautiful venue where Payne-Corley shines is in its staff and their event training. Krista and Mike together have over 60 years of experience in event planning. Their gracious staff make every guest feel at home and at ease. They are quick and know how to think on their feet. I particularly remember them accommodating a wedding on one of the rare occasions when it snowed in Duluth.

The wedding took place at my favorite venue Naylor Hall. I arrived early to get an idea of the layout since Ryan and Kitty changed plans and decided to have the wedding indoors because of the weather. He contacted me through instagram and wanted me to photograph him proposing to his girlfriend on Saturday. I told him I would be honored! We set up a time for a phone call and set up the logistics for photographing the proposal.

Since it is close to Thanksgiving, I wanted to write a blog on being thankful. I was looking at our instagram page and I noticed that we are up to 1,000 posts!
I am so thankful to Heather who is in charge of social media and is editor of the website. She is the one that writes all those posts on Instagram. I have gotten many compliments on her posts. It was Heather’s idea to have Fun Fact Friday! I look forward to her Friday posts. I have shot 100s of weddings but I still learn something every Friday! Engagement photos serve many purposes. They can be used on a Save The Date card or in a wedding announcement in a newspaper. The engagement shoot can also be used as a practice session before the big day so the couple can get to know their photographer beforehand and see previews of what the pictures may look like. The wedding took place at the Four Seasons Hotel in Downtown Atlanta it is a great place for Atlanta wedding photographers. . It is within walking distance to the Piedmont Park and High Museum. When you enter the hotel the first thing you see is an impressive staircase to the second floor balcony and restaurant. Then there is another set of stairs that takes you to the 4th floor to the main ballroom where the reception was held. The wedding was held on the fifth floor terrace area. It is a beautiful terrace where you get to see the High Museum of Art and Peachtree Street.
