Striking a Pose: The Meaningful History Behind Bridal Portraits

If there’s one thing an Atlanta wedding photographer knows, it’s that no wedding album is complete without a glamour shot of the bride. There is always a photo of her, dressed to the nines in her gorgeous gown, smiling and striking a pose. Some people don’t know that this photo is actually called a “bridal portrait” and they have been around for centuries. This week, I want to go into the history and meaning behind the photographs we see today.

Although brides everywhere take a “bridal portrait” nowadays, it first came about among wealthy families, mostly royalty, in Southern Europe in the middle ages. Before cameras, paintings were the only way to really capture significant moments in this time. When there was a wedding on the horizon, the family would commission a painting of the bride from a professional artist to commemorate the event. The bride and the painter would meet at a designated date and location, where she would then sit for a portrait in her full bridal ensemble. This would take place days, possibly weeks before the actual wedding ceremony. Sometimes, during this era, by the time the wedding day arrived the groom (normally a king or a royal) would have only seen his bride through a painting of her commissioned for their engagement. The portrait of the bride was then displayed at the wedding reception and then hung in the home of the new couple to instill family pride in future generations.

The invention of cameras and advancement of photography opened up new opportunities for the bridal portrait. At first cameras were large, so brides still had to go to a studio to get their photo taken. However, around the time of World War II, cameras had gotten smaller and more portable. This meant that brides had more flexibility for their photos. The date and location can be chosen by the bride now, instead being confined to the limits of a studio, and it can all be set up the way the bride wishes in order to showcase her personality. The new technology also made the photographs smaller in size, which meant people could keep them in their pockets or purses, and they were then given as keepsakes to those parted from their lovers by the war. They were also more affordable, meaning more families in more places could afford to have them done. The “bridal portrait” was now accessible to more brides than ever before, and they soon became a common element of weddings. The tradition has even become a staple in places like the South in the United States.

Today, bridal portraits are usually done the day of the wedding, either before or after the ceremony, along with the other photos of the day. Now they are used on a bride’s social media as a profile picture or as part of a digital album to commemorate the special day. Whatever the bridal portrait may mean to you, it can be a special keepsake of a very important milestone that you can hold onto for a long time.

What an Honor Being A Atlanta Wedding Photographer! I get to capture a Paebaek Ceremony!

by David Diener

The ceremony was held in the parents living room. They had set up the folding screen, sitting area, mat and table. The table had food towers with candles for decoration. The nine foods were on the table representing the couple’s life long union. There were dates on the table symbolizing the couple rising early and working hard. There were also bags of chestnuts to help ward off evil spirits. Parents sat on one side of the table and the couple sat on the other side of the table. On the couples side of the table was a tea set for serving. On the parents side were several cups for being served. While the parents are being served the take turns offer advice and blessings to the bridal couple. They also give the the couple white envelopes containing money to help them on their new journey. It is important that the bride and groom receive any gifts with two hands, rather than just one, to show respect.

Thankful for Kind Couples and the Honor of Being a Wedding Photographer

There are certain times when I look at a photo and I am reminded of how lucky I am to be a photographer and that I get to meet so many amazing people in my line of work. When I do engagement photos, I get to know a lot about the couple. I prod them with questions, like how did you meet and how long have you known each other? The one I really like to ask is when did you know you were in love? It is so cool how couples can really open up when you ask them a few questions. You learn about their family, friends and life events that have made them who they are. That is why I love meeting couples and being an Atlanta wedding photographer.

As an Atlanta wedding photographer I have the honor of shooting a lot of engagement sessions at many unique places around the area. I have shot Piedmont Park, Ponce City Market, the Beltline and many other amazing Atlanta landmarks. This week I got to shoot at one of my favorite Atlanta landmarks: the Waffle House! It is my favorite restaurant in Atlanta and the very first Waffle House was located in Avondale Estates.

I got an email a few months ago from a couple who recently got engaged. They live in New York, but were coming to Atlanta to attend a wedding and wanted to do their engagement session while they were here. They had one request: they wanted to do the session where they had their first date: the Waffle House! When I heard this, I was so excited! I knew it was gonna be a blast!

This week’s wedding took place in one of my favorite cities around Atlanta: Roswell Georgia! If you read last week’s blog you got a brief history of the founder of Roswell, Roswell King. His residence, a large gorgeous mansion called Barrington Hall, was named after his son, Barrington. It is the crowning jewel of the historic buildings in the Roswell area.

For the couple’s family photos, they decided to go to the park across the street from restaurant. As luck would have it, there was a wedding going on at that very same park. Since I have shot so many times in that area I suggested we shoot at Barrington Hall. Within a few steps we were in the front yard of that gorgeous mansion, where we had a fun shoot using the gardens, front yard and grand porch! It was just a happy accident that we were so close to such a beautiful location and a few steps from the restaurant. We were so lucky and had a variety of shots done in a few minutes!

Roswell Georgia is a Great Place for a Wedding and Engagement Session!

This week’s blog takes place at Barrington Hall in Roswell, where I shot a recent engagement session. I met Erin and Aaron (Yes they have the same name!) at Barrington Hall early in the morning to beat the heat and the crowds that sometimes gather at this popular location. On this particular morning, we were the first people there! It was cool in the morning, which made it a perfect time to shoot. There are variety of places at Barrington Hall that are perfect for photos. First you have the gardens, which have some great color and features. Then there’s the grand entrance to the stately manor where the couple can walk and goof off. The highlight in this spot has to be the magnificent columns on the building that go almost to the sky! As a Atlanta wedding photographer you could not ask for more!

This week I did a session with two amazing people that proudly serve the community, making their part of the world a better place to live. They have so much heart and truly care about the city they serve.

As you can see, they are both police officers. They chose to do their engagement shoot in the historic section of Chamblee. This is the strip where the town center, including all the the shops and business, grew out from the nearby railroad line and stop there. A hundred years ago this area was well removed from and Atlanta and was considered small town. Now it is part of the city sprawl and inside the Atlanta perimeter boundary.

All for good reason, as the bride absolutely deserves to have an amazing time and feel special on her big day. However, as the other half of the happy couple, the groom also deserves to feel special on his big day. The Atlanta wedding photographers have taken many photos highlighting special moments surrounding the groom, so this week we want to showcase some of those photos and shine a spotlight on our awesome Atlanta grooms!

This weeks wedding is about a couple who, like a lot of couples, had to put off their wedding plans due to Covid-19. Hayden and Kaitlyn got engaged almost 2 years ago and, after rescheduling twice, they finally got to have the wedding they always wanted with their friends and family.

Now let’s go back a few years. They dated and fell in love and, after a while, they took a romantic European vacation. While looking into the sea from the high cliffs of Ireland, Hayden got down on one knee and proposed to Kaitlyn.

This week’s wedding will go down in Atlanta Artistic Weddings history as one of the best weddings ever! The couple choose two of the most Iconic wedding venues in Atlanta. They held their ceremony at the Catholic Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, which is one of the oldest catholic churches in the southeast, and their reception took place at the Fabulous Fox Theater!

First, I want to give you a little background on this awesome couple. To know them is to know they love to dance! They are talented competitive ballroom dancers who have even gone to professional dance competitions. A lot of their friends are also competitive dancers. When we met, they explained how important dancing was to them. When you see them dance, their passion for the art form comes alive. You can also see the strong connection they have, since they are so in tune with each other while they dance.
